Take a look into some of the most mysterious and creepy places on the planet, known to be sites of disappearances, UFO sightings and animal mutilations.
Lake Anjikuni
If you had thought the Bermuda Triangle, with its singular disappearances is eerie enough, think again, for Lake Anjikuni, in the Kivalliq Region in Canada has been known for the disappearance of an entire village.
Thus when in 1930, a trapper named Joe Labelle entered the local Inuit village, in search of shelter for the night, he saw that the village was totally deserted and the inhabitants were nowhere to be seen, though everything else, including food and rifles were intact and in their places. The frightened Labelle reported the matter to the RCMP, who started a probe.
Terrifyingly, the probe found that in the village burial ground, at least one grave had been opened, but clearly not by animals and the corpse vanished. Furthermore, about 300 feet from the village, the bodies of around 7 sled dogs were found, having starved to death despite open stores of food at the village. Strange lights and also been reported to have been seen on the lake at the time of the disappearance of the people, by some accounts.
It is unclear who or what were responsible for the incident…It could be ghosts, spirits or aliens, but whoever they were, the story surely sends a nasty chill down your spine, everytime you read it.
Bridgewater Triangle
Triangles are after us. But it is a good idea to stay away from especially this one.
This area of about 200 square miles in southeastern Massachusetts just south of Boston, is replete with paranormal activity, probably more than anywhere else. It has been subjected to numerous cryptozoological sightings.
Since the 1970’s there have been several reports of tall, hairy, ape-like creatures roaming the swamp. There have also been numerous sightings of Thunderbirds, giant Pterodactyl-like creatures that have been seen fighting in midair.
In 1976 a man reportedly saw a giant, ghostly, red-eyed dog rip the throats out of two of his ponies. Besides these cryptids, there have been numerous reports of mutilated animals (mainly cows and calves) in the region. Some attribute these to satanic cults, but no one has come forward and no one even knows where the animals came from.
The Bridgewater Triangle is a hotbed of UFO sightings, dating all the way back to 1760, when a ‘sphere of fire’ was reportedly seen hovering over New England. Since then there have been numerous sightings of unexplained objects in the sky—including mysterious black helicopters.
An account from 1994 recounts a strange triangular object with red and white lights. In 1908 on Halloween night, two undertakers who were traveling to Bridgewater noticed in the sky what looked like a ‘giant lantern’. They watched it for almost 40 minutes before it disappeared.
Bennington Triangle
Another cursed triangle. This one is found in southwestern Vermont, and it is the site of a string of 5 mysterious disappearances between 1945-1950, related in no way but geographic location.
Middie Rivers, 75 was leading a group of hunters on November 12, 1945. On their way back, he got ahead of his group and was never seen again. Only a single rifle shell found in a stream was recovered as evidence.
Paula Welden an 18-year-old hiker and a sophomore of Bennington College never returned from her hike and no trace of her was ever found. Exactly 3 years later, on December 1, 1949, a veteran named James E Tetford was taking a bus back to his home.
Witnesses saw him on the bus the stop before this place, which would have been his destination, but when the reached Bennington, he was nowhere to be seen. His luggage was still on the bus.
Eight-year-old Paul Jepson disappeared on October 12, 1950, while his mother was busy feeding the pigs. Despite having a highly visible red jacket, none of the search parties formed were able to find the boy.
The last disappearance was a woman named Frieda Langer. On October 28, 1950, she was hiking with her cousin on Glastenbury Mountain when she slipped in a stream. She decided to go back quickly and change her clothes and her body was found 6 months later, though thorough searches had been on since her disappearance.
The body was in such a mangled shape that no cause of death could be determined. She was the only victim whose body was recovered and many theories are proffered for the incident, including aliens, bigfoot-like monsters, or some unknown serial killer, but the mystery remains.
Michigan Triangle
Another geographical triangle and another place known for mysterious disappearances.
This place located in the middle of Lake Michigan shot into limelight, following the disapperance of Captain George R Donner of OM McFarland in 1937. On his way from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Port Washington, Wisconsin, he had to pass through the triangle.
As the story goes, he had retired to his cabin and asked his second mate to wake him up when they reached their destination. However when he went to do so, the captain had vanished and was never to be found again.
Then the Northwest Airlines Flight 2501, en route to Minneapolis from New York on June 23, 1950, quite inexplicably disappeared over the triangle. Reportedly, captain Robert C Lind had to take a detour due to bad weather and fly over the cursed place.
At around midnight, he had asked to drop altitude from 3500 to 2500 feet, without specifying a reason, but was denied permission. That was the last communication that the ground staff had with the aircraft.
Eerily, only little wreckage of the plane were found on the water, but that much and no complete human remains were either found. It will always remain a mystery as to what exactly happened to the plane or its wreckage and the remains of its passengers and how and why it crashed in spite of being in good shape and what may have impelled to the pilot to ask for dropping of altitude.
The Devil’s Sea
The Devil’s Sea or Dragon’s Triangle, off the coast of Japan is held to be the counterpart of the Bermuda Triangle in the Pacific Ocean. It is known to be the site of unexplained phenomena including magnetic anomalies, inexplicable lights and objects, and of course, mysterious disappearances, and significantly, is held to be dangerous by the Japanese fishing authorities, who advise to stay clear of the place.
It is said that in 1952, the Japanese government had sent a vessel named Kaio Maru No. 5 to investigate the mysteries of the area, but needless to say, the vessel and its crew of 31 were never to be seen again. Legend also has it that the Mongol ruler Kublai Khan had attempted to invade Japan by crossing this strange triangle, but had failed, having lost nearly 40,000 of his men.
The suspects for the mystery of this place are usual- aliens, spirits and gates to parallel universes, but till the actual cause is found out, it is best to avoid this place.
San Luis Valley
San Luis Valley, in southern Colorado, is an area where inexplicable phenomena including UFO sightings and hundreds of unexplained farm animal mutilations are not out of place. UFO sightings are so common that a woman named Judy Messoline has even set up a UFO watchtower on her property, which has witnessed over 50 UFO sightings since 2000 alone.
Far more chilling are the tales of animal mutilations from the region. They began in 1967, when a horse named Snippy was found one morning with her brain missing and her neck bones completely cleaned.
Since then, animal mutilations have occurred regularly in the region, sharing several things in common—firstly, there is never a trace of blood around the animals, and secondly, the animals are all damaged with precise cuts, distinctly not the work of predators. Finally, all of the mutilations happen overnight to otherwise healthy creatures.
Some farmers have reported seeing strange lights in the sky the nights before finding a carcass, which may prove that they are the work of extraterrestrial predators.
Bigelow Ranch
This 480-acre property in northwest Utah in the US has been known to be home to countless UFO sightings, animal mutilations, and other strange occurrences. Though strange occurrences have been reported since the 1950’s, it really came to limelight with the story of the experiences of two ranchers, Terry and Gwen Sherman who bought it in 1994.
On the first day, they entered the ranch, they were greeted by a large wolf in the pasture. The wolf seemed docile and the Shermans even tried to pet it, but then one day it grabbed a calf by its snout through the bars of its enclosure.
UFO forest
The ranchers tried to shoot it but the bullets had no effect on it. Then it ran away. The Shermans followed it but it’s tracks stopped abruptly as if it had vanished.
Since then the two ranchers were plagued by numerous strange happenings, like UFO sightings, intelligent floating orbs (reputed to have incinerated three of their dogs), inexplicable cryptids, and gruesome cattle mutilations. The Shermans, in the end were left with no option but to sell the property, which they did two years later to Robert Bigelow.
Bigelow, the founder of the National Institute for Discovery Science, wanted to study the mysteries surrounding the ranch. He owns the ranch to this day and NIDS keeps a tight lid on their findings.
Point Pleasant
At one point the name given to this place may be considered apt, but as time went by and the strangeness of occurrences here came to be known, no semblance of pleasantness remains.
The most famous of these mysterious happenings has been the one involving a creature known as Mothman, who was known to have terrorized the small West Virginia community from November 1966 to December 1967.
Over a hundred different citizens of Point Pleasant are eyewitnesses to this creature, a 7-foot tall broad-chested man with hypnotic, glowing red eyes, and wings that stretch 10 feet long and drag behind him on the ground. The Mothman, has been the subject of both a book and a movie and has his own statue in Point Pleasant.
He has been variously described as being an extraterrestrial, or a mutant or a cryptid. Some people however have tried to trivialize the matter by suggesting that people of Point Pleasant were actually scared of owls or a Sandhill Crane.
Whatever the case, reports of Mothman stopped after the Silver Bridge collapsed on December 15, 1967, killing 46 people and leading many to believe that the two events were somehow connected.
Several other paranormal tales from Point Pleasant include UFO sightings and reports of so-called ‘Men In Black’ — human-looking creatures who unnerve others by the sheer abundance of peculiarities in their speech, appearance, and mannerisms. These ‘men’ supposedly appear looking for information about the paranormal (or rather, people who have this information).
Superstition Mountains
These mountains located east of Phoenix, in the US state of Arizona has been said to have housed a goldmine that was discovered by an explorer named Jacob Waltz in the 1800s. However, he kept the exact location of the mine secret and the secret died with him.
The mysterious goldmine had been dubbed the ‘Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine’ and many are known to have perished in the search of the mine. It is now said that the spirits of these dead explorers, haunt these mountains and the native Indians believe that the treasures are guarded by beings called Tuar-Tums or ‘Little People’ who live below the mountains in caves and tunnels. Some Apaches moreover, believe that the entrance to hell is located in the mountains.
