Republican Reps. Mike Johnson of Louisiana and Jim Banks of Indiana gave President Donald Trump words of encouragement, telling him to keep fighting against election fraud.
“I’m a constitutional lawyer, and I’ve spoken with the president about this over the last couple of weeks, encouraging him to exhaust all the legal remedies, because it is so critically important,” said Johnson during a video conference with Banks and Robert Doar, president of the American Enterprise Institute.
Johnson is the outgoing chairman of the House Republican Study Committee. Banks is slated to be his replacement. The Republican Study Committee is the largest caucus of conservative Republicans in Congress.
“The distinction between this election and all previous ones is you didn’t have this level of fraud alleged in so many places at one time,” added Johnson.
Before and during his meeting with Banks and Doar, Johnson said he got a lot of messages from his constituents urging him to keep standing with the president and to do everything in his power to make sure that the outcome of the election is fair. When asked what he thinks about the Trump campaign’s legal battles, he said that he is hopeful but is unsure of what the outcome will be.
Banks argued that the Democratic Party has been planning this since they took back control of the House of Representatives after the 2018 midterm election.
When the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi retook the Speaker’s gavel, the Democrats introduced H.R. 1, legislation that would have nationalized the election and pushed all states to adopt mail-in voting schemes.
Banks further argued that, with the help of liberal state governments, House Democrats were able to expand mail-in voting, which gave them a disproportionate advantage. The massive amount of absentee voting created much of the controversy surrounding the election.
Banks proposed several solutions to get out of this crisis and preserve the integrity and security of elections. Mail-in voting can be banned altogether. If this is impossible, Banks wants certain security standards to be implemented to make sure the mail-in voting process isn’t vulnerable to fraud.
“There are sensible pieces of legislation that we can advocate for that would return election integrity and security,” said Banks, who said that he wants the Republican Study Committee to lead the fight for election integrity in the federal legislature.
Among the things Banks wants to advocate for are making Trump’s individual tax cuts permanent, holding China accountable, maintaining strong national defense spending and protecting working-class jobs.

Banks: Trump is the future of the Republican Party
Banks has stated before that he believes the Republican Study Committee should drive the conversation on what the future of the GOP will look like. Banks’ main argument is that he believes “Trumpism” can greatly help the party, and Republicans should embrace it wholeheartedly.
“The big area where we have to move, that’s different for the conservative movement, is in what President Trump has taught us in marrying the populist ideals of Trump with the traditional conservative issues,” said Banks during his meeting with Johnson and Doar.
Banks argued that this merging of Trumpism with traditional Republican conservatism is necessary if they want to further broaden the party’s main base.
“If we’re learning the lessons that President Trump taught us, to appeal to the populace base and bring new voters into the Republican Party, we need to tackle a new subset of issues to the conservative movement,” said Banks, who believes some of the issues they can tackle include rebuilding the country’s manufacturing industry and putting American working-class jobs first when introducing new trade and immigration policies.
“If we’re going to win the majority in 2022 and win the White House in 2024, our party has to look a lot more like Donald Trump than some of the Republican candidates in the past. Trump taught us how to fight and win with an agenda that appeals to the popular base. House conservatives must follow his example and carry the Trump message for the next two years.”
Several Republicans, including Banks, have embraced the idea of Trump running for president again in 2024.
“The President is very popular in the Republican Party, and he would be very tough to beat,” said Banks. “I’m from Indiana, and I want to see my guy, Mike Pence, in the White House one day. And hopefully, in 2024, we’ll have Mike Pence on the ballot one way or another.”
Other Republican officials who have stated that they believe Trump will win if he decides to run in 2024 include Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Rick Scott of Florida, and Reps. Matt Gaetz of Florida and Paul Gosar of Arizona.
